A dilution ratio expresses the relationship between chemical concentrate and water, written as two numbers separated by a colon. The format is concentrate : water. A 1:32 ratio means one part concentrate mixed with thirty-two parts water, for a total of 33 parts of finished solution.

To convert a ratio into ounces per gallon, divide 128 (the number of ounces in a gallon) by the total parts. For a 1:32 ratio, that is 128 divided by 33, which equals approximately 3.9 ounces of concentrate per gallon of finished solution. For metric, divide 1,000 ml (one liter) by the total parts.

Always add concentrate to water, never the other way around. This matters for both mixing consistency and safety — adding water to concentrated acids or alkalis can cause violent exothermic reactions.
